Registration Open for the Next JUSTRAC+ Training Course on the Civil Law System

On January 30-31, 2020, the Rule of Law Collaborative will hold the JUSTRAC+ Interagency Civil Law Training Program, the third iteration of JUSTRAC’s course on the Civil Law system, in cooperation with the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, U.S. Department of State.

This two-day training program is designed to give participants a strong foundation in terminology and concepts relevant to the Civil Law system—the most widespread legal system in the world—and focuses on knowledge that is beneficial for USG and other justice sector and rule of law reform practitioners working in countries built on or around the Civil Law tradition. The course is appropriate for professionals who have experience working in Civil Law countries, as well as for professionals who do not.

Upon completion, participants will have an understanding of such foundational topics as:

  • Sources of law and lawmaking;
  • Legal education;
  • Structure of the courts;
  • Key actors in the justice sector;
  • Variation among countries that use the Civil Law system;
  • USG program design in Civil Law contexts;
  • The “inquisitorial” trial model in Civil Law countries and transitions to the “adversarial” model; and
  • Future change trends in the Civil Law system.
